National Family Caregivers Month

November 6, 2025

November is National Family Caregivers Month — a time to recognize, support, and celebrate the millions of individuals who dedicate their time, energy, and love to caring for family members with disabilities or chronic illnesses.

This year’s theme, “Plug-In To Care,” reminds us that while caregiving is a powerful act of love – no one should do it alone. Plug-in by connecting to resources, experts, and supportive communities that keep you and your loved one thriving. One of the best ways to plug-in is through thoughtful planning for the future — and that’s where Special Needs Trusts come in.

A Special Needs Trust (SNT) is a legal tool designed to protect the assets of a person with a disability while preserving their eligibility for essential public benefits such as SSI and Medicaid.

Key Points to Know:
• Two Main Types:
o First-Party SNT: Funded with the beneficiary’s own assets (e.g., unplanned inheritance, Social Security backpay or settlement).
o Third-Party SNT: Funded by someone other than the beneficiary, typically parents or relatives (e.g., planned inheritance from will, trust or estate, life insurance, and/or gifts)
• Purpose: Helps pay for quality-of-life expenses — such as therapies, education, and recreation — that government benefits don’t cover.
• Benefit: Ensures your loved one’s financial future without jeopardizing their access to vital assistance.

Creating an SNT can provide caregivers with the assurance that their loved one will continue to be supported, even when they can no longer provide care themselves.

Caregiving is a journey of love — and planning ahead helps make that journey a little smoother. This National Family Caregivers Month take time to celebrate your role, seek support, and create a plan that provides peace of mind for you and your loved one.
